How NOT to leave a comment on the hub pages

On the hub pages leaving comments for one another is second nature. The hub pages has even recently changed the commenter accolade to include different levels, with the level 8 commenter being the highest. I really don't agree with this change, because it further promotes isolation between hubbers, and promotes people simply making comments to receive a higher commenter level. I don't particularly agree with a lot of things that have been happening here on the hub pages lately, but that's neither here or there. I want to share with you all a recent comment, which was left for me. At first I raised my eye brows in confusion, and then I just had to simply laugh out loud. I've copied below word for word, an exact copy of the comment. Here's a look at the comment in question.

The Comment

The title is great but it led me to expect more so I was a tad dissapointed with how the story developed - I didn't get any surprises. Reenactment should be hyphonated -re-enactment. and deep in Deep South should capitalised. However, I found the training programme amusing.

The above is simply my opinion and meant to constructive so take what, if anything is useful and dump the rest.

Cheers

Now what at first raised my eye brows was the fact that what this person, and I won't name names, attempted to point out was baffling to me. The reason for this was that I really can't find any reason to agree with his attempt at constructive criticism. What made me laugh was that he used not one, not two, not three, but four misspelled words (in bold print above) to try to correct my spelling. Talk about the kettle calling the pot black! I mean come on give me a break, or was this a joke? Then of coarse there may have been a little bit to much alcohol involved.

What ever the reason was, it could have all been avoided by just taking a little more time. Constructive criticism is suppose to be constructive. This comment wasn't the least bit constructive. The one thing this comment does show is that it's a great example of how not to leave a comment on the hub pages. Another thing which I've started to notice, since the commenter accolade started identifying different levels, is people are cutting and pasting the same comment to different hubs. They might switch a word or two around, and throw in the name of the author of the hub, but it's still the same comment being used over and over.

One lesson which I can certainly say that I learned from all of this, is that it's important to proof read your comments before hitting that post comment button. You need to also remember that even after you hit that post comment button, you still have a few minutes to read over your comment and edit it before it turns permanent. This will in turn ensure that you don't end up looking like an idiot to everyone who reads it. This may in turn take a few more minutes to complete your comment, but the end result will be more than worth it. This hub was written in an attempt to both blow off a little steam, and make a valid point. Thank you for stopping by, and have a nice day. Keep on hubbing.................................

I think for most hubbers it is a matter of time. We try to read the work of a lot of hubbers as well as write our own hubs and this is time consuming. If a hubber has a job and trying to work hubpages in they may not be fully on the mark. Your hub is a very good reminder for hubbers to take time it makes a difference to the author.

Well, what can I say. First I am sorry that someone left you a comment that obviously ticked you off. Secondly, it is common courtesy that we comment on our friend's hubs to give feedback, encourage and also let them know we are around. When I started leaving comments after my return to Hubpages from a really long break, I have been motivated to put in more time for my friends because at least I can see the rewards of my work. Reading and commenting are both a joy and work, so why not appreciate some kind of reward. It is wonderful and it is so American, isn't it?

Hi goody7 - I would feel exactly like you do. Comments should be constructive, appropriate and they certainly should not be cut and paste efforts. Nice Hub.

Well said, I agree that there should no past and cut efforts. Yes taking the time to read others work and leave insightful comments is a plus although they sometimes might leave grammatical errors it is important to have constructive criticism not just the sake of criticism. thanks for sharing

I'm hoping the commenter level will encourage people to read eachother's hubs all the way through. Is there a way to measure the value of comments by anything but length?

Absolutely a wonderful hub, Goody! Voted up and away. I too, get confused with the HP changes, but there again, Ive only been a member for the last nine months. But HP beats other websites in their expansive ways they allow us to express ourselves in words.

Keep in touch.

I'm with you..perhaps this person should eat "bran muffins" more often. I have been guilty of dyslexic fingers and trust me even though this is cyberspace I still find it embarassing..I have not written a Hub as yet..HP keeps stating I am " sub-standard"..oh,well...loved the article...

Goody7, What a disappointing experience! If there's disagreement and disappointment, the person in question could have chosen the email option which is indicated on everyone's profile page.

Please accept my apologies for such an experience in what should be a supportive community of artists and writers.

Thank you for sharing,

Derdriu

Really funny hub you have here. Luckily, everything I've received thus far has either been truly constructive or just downright nice. That being said, however, I've gotten comments like this elsewhere, so I can see where you're coming from.

This reminds me of a title I read recently that complained about people who make grammatical and spelling errors in their work...and the title was misspelled! LOL!! Good hub!

Such a good point in regards to copying and pasting comments. I suppose it is better than nothing, but very impersonal. Thanks for posting, voted up and funny.

Great fun hub. It is only my opinion but I think that some people make up their minds to find problems to complain about. There is a huge difference between: simply complaining and offering support. Most people here know this. There is always one!

I know, it's a tough subject and I am not supposed to laugh but I was laughing like mad, I had to read that comment twice to get the point LOL Why people even need those accolades? It's not like we can get any free lollipops for it LOL I'd love one, please, thank you. LOL Anyway, it's good to have some stamp of Hubpages approval for our(self-esteem)selves but I don't think that people who surf through pages for the purpose of fun and free entertainment (like me, for example) actually look at them... so it's sort of pointless even for the show off purpose (unless it's somehow reflects that self-ad-cents thingy that I doubt and don't get it either). Great hub all the way!
